The vineyards of Forst are well known to all Riesling amateurs in the World. Among em, Ungeheur (which means monster if literally translated but in this case the christening actually stems from a certain Mr. Ungeheuer) is for sure one of the top vineyards, maybe not as singular as Pechstein or Kirchenstück, but definitely with enough volcanic rock in the ground to lend the wines charismatic personality.

Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan, or to keep it short just Bassermann-Jordan, one of the famous “B”’s of the Mittelhaardt (besides Bürklin, Von Buhl…) is an estate with a long tradition which knows its vineyards and how to get the best out of its Terroir. Let’s see if this one is a good ambassador of the Forster Ungeheuer.

Colour is pale yellow with green reflections. Nose is rich and dense in a typical Pfalz way with lots of yellow fruit.
On the palate fruit is also dominating supported by an elegant albeit not very discrete acidity. This makes the wine quite juicy. But it is not as dense and rich on the palate as it was indicated by the nose. Less baroque than you’d expect and actually quite close to a genuine slim Kabinett style which is enjoyable.The typical minerality you would expect from this vineyard is also discernable but rather discrete. Finish is on mineral and fruit notes with a satisfying medium length.
For the Pfalz region this is a rather slim Kabinett, of course still much more rich then let’s say a Rheingau or Saar Kabinett, but this is just right fro a Kabinett representing the region, very enjoyable. It still has some ageing potential also. 85 points
